Aleksej Ivanovich, the private tutor of a heavily indebted general, waits with his employer's family in the spa town of Roulettenburg for the death of a wealthy aunt. However, it soon becomes clear that the old lady has no intention of leaving any money to the general. Aleksej, who is hopelessly in love with Polina, the general's stepdaughter, devises a plan: he heads to the casino to win back the family debts at the roulette table - with spectacular success! But his love for gambling soon becomes stronger than his feelings for Polina ever were.
