Anna, a young woman from eastern Ukraine, arrives at a homeless shelter in a small town in the Swiss Jura after a difficult journey. Shortly thereafter, war breaks out in her homeland, leaving her without a home as well.

In the shelter, people from various countries and with different stories come together. Alongside them, Anna navigates the exhausting daily life of the homeless community. They conduct house and apartment clearances, sort and repair the collected items, and sell them in their own shop. But it's not just the discarded things that gain new value; the people in the shelter also regain their dignity. When Anna finds a house made of matchsticks while sorting through items, she recognizes her new living environment in it: no matter how fragile each individual stick may be, when glued together with others, they form a stable house.

The author spent several months in this homeless shelter. The novel is dedicated to the people she encountered in the "Matchstick House" and its surroundings. The book is illustrated with full-page drawings by Ukrainian illustrator Serhii Kostyshyn.
