As punishment for disposing of his wife, Prosecutor Mississippi intends to marry Anastasia, who has also murdered her husband. However, she rejects such a form of punishment and instead begins an affair with Mississippi's rival. The situation spirals increasingly out of control when a mysterious count and former lover of Anastasia appears. Director Kurt Hoffmann collaborated with Friedrich Dürrenmatt for "The Marriage of Mr. Mississippi," who adapted his successful play for the film. The resulting work has now been meticulously restored by SRF and the Cinemathèque suisse.
