Billy Bob Thornton's plan to escape his dreary life is going to go horribly wrong.

A small Californian town in the late forties: the silent barber Ed Crane struggles with the monotony of his life. Dissatisfied with his job and marriage, he suddenly seems to be offered a new chance when a customer tells him about the success of his dry cleaning and offers him to become a business partner of his flourishing company with $10,000. Ed decides to extort the money he lacks from department store owner Big Dave, who has an affair with Ed's wife. But Big Dave finds out that Ed is the blackmailer and he gets him involved in a deadly scuffle...
