Elam Harnish is a young man who, with inherited money and an older friend from university, runs an average law firm in turn-of-the-century San Francisco. One day he is called to the countryside where old Tarwater is to be incapacitated because he wants to sell the farm and move to Alaska with the proceeds to dig for gold.
