The very first time he sees her, Armand Duval senses that Marguerite Gautier will play an important role in his life. The wealthy bourgeois falls in love with the courtesan and her love for him is also aroused. But when Armand's father learns of the improper connection, he urges Marguerite to withdraw for the benefit of his son. Out of love for Armand, she gives in, pushes him away and returns to her old life as a courtesan, broken.
