Feingefühl, Gänsehautmomente und trockener Humor: "The King´s Speech" (2010) erzählt die Geschichte des stotternden Königs George VI. (1895-1952) mit großem Einfühlungsvermögen.
As the son of British King George V, it is one of Bertie's (Colin Firth) duties to speak publicly. For the reserved and thoughtful man, this is a torment, as he has suffered from a severe stutter since his youth. No doctor or psychologist can help him, which is why Bertie's loving and caring wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) turns to the eccentric speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). With his assertive demeanor and unconventional treatment methods, he initially clashes with his noble patient. However, soon initial successes begin to show. After the death of his father and the abdication of his brother Edward VIII (Guy Pearce) due to his love for the divorced commoner Wallis Simpson, Bertie unexpectedly becomes England's new king under the name George VI in 1936. Public appearances and radio addresses become even harder to avoid than before, and the looming war increases the pressure on the shy monarch. The collaboration and growing friendship with Logue significantly help Bertie. But just before the official coronation, an unexpected revelation puts their mutual trust and Bertie's struggle against stuttering to the test.
