Upon her arrival, she initially faces many disappointments as she is not accepted by the Chinese people. However, she does not give up and wins not only the friendship of the residents of Yang Cheng but also the respect of the Mandarin (Robert Donat). Through him, she meets the Eurasian General Linnan (Curt Jürgens), with whom she falls hopelessly in love. However, her happiness is threatened by the Japanese invasion of China. To save the lives of 100 children, Gladys decides to lead them to safety through enemy territory.
