The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey (USA/New Zealand 2012, 176 min., Rated PG-12):
At the center of "The Hobbit" is the title character Bilbo Baggins, who unexpectedly finds himself involved in an epic mission: he must help the dwarves reclaim their treasure, which the dragon Smaug has hidden in the Lonely Mountain. The wizard Gandalf the Grey appears unexpectedly at Bilbo's doorstep, and soon the hobbit joins the group of 13 dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey takes them into the wilderness, through dangerous territories teeming with goblins and orcs, giant spiders, shape-shifters, and wizards.
Although their goal lies in the eastern deserts of the Lonely Mountain, they must first escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo encounters the creature that will profoundly affect his life: Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum on the shore of an underground lake, Bilbo Baggins learns not only about deep-seated malice but also about courage in a way that surprises even him. He comes into possession of Gollum's ring, which he calls "my precious" and which possesses unexpected, useful powers – a simple golden ring that is inextricably linked to the fate of all Middle-earth. However, Bilbo has no idea of this yet.
The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug (USA/New Zealand 2013, 179 min., Rated PG-12):
In "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," title character Bilbo Baggins continues the adventure of his epic mission: together with wizard Gandalf and 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield, he attempts to free the lost dwarven kingdom of Erebor.
The companions have survived the beginning of their unexpected journey – on their way east, they now encounter the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant spiders in the treacherous Mirkwood. They are captured by the dangerous wood elves but manage to escape.
