Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) is the undisputed godfather of his family, which is in constant conflict with other powerful families. His youngest son Michael (Al Pacino), who has served in the military and wants little to do with the family, is drawn into the brutal circumstances when his father is shot. Unexpectedly, he coldly avenges the assassination attempt and must flee the country. He goes to Sicily, where he learns about his roots, while his brother Sonny leads the family. But Sonny is also murdered, and Michael returns, tougher than ever, as his father slowly recovers.
