Umberto Eco, born in 1932 in Alessandria, currently lives in Milan. He studied education and philosophy and earned his doctorate in 1954 at the University of Turin. He then worked for Italian television and served as a freelance lecturer in aesthetics and visual communication in Turin, Milan, and Florence. Since 1971, he has been teaching semiotics in Bologna. Eco has received numerous awards, including the "Premio Strega" (1981), and was named an honorary doctor by the Sorbonne in Paris in 1988.

He authored numerous writings on the theory and practice of signs, literature, art, and, not least, the aesthetics of the Middle Ages. His novels "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum" have become international bestsellers. In 2011, Umberto Eco was awarded the "Premio Pavese.".
