The Flame of Freedom

As gripping as a thriller - the beginning of democracy in Germany On 24 February 1848, revolution is made in Paris for the third time since 1789, the monarchy is overthrown and the republic proclaimed. And finally the revolutionary spark jumps over the Rhine. In the 34 German states and 4 free cities of the time, uprisings begin against the ruling police and military monarchies, against the arbitrary rule of the German Confederation. For the first time, democracy raises its head in the German states and demands are made for direct, universal suffrage, fundamental rights, separation of powers and social equality. The dramatic struggle for the values that are the foundations of our community today begins.

Jörg Bong is a literary scholar, publicist and former publisher of the S. Fischer publishing houses. He publishes crime novels under the name Jean-Luc Bannalec. He has been dealing with the historical events of 1848 and 1849 as well as with questions of the democracy movement in Germany for decades.
