In a field hospital, a young doctor encounters Private A. H., an Austrian from Braunau, who suffers from a fictitious blindness during the last days of World War I. Obsessed with the idea of healing the man, the doctor takes on the case and successfully treats A. H. He is unaware that this insignificant, mentally ill soldier would one day plunge the world into a brutal war and seek to take his life. The author Ernst Weiss took his own life during the German troops' invasion of Paris. It was only decades after his death that the novel was published for the first time.
