The fate of the brilliant physics student Stephen seems sealed when the 21-year-old is diagnosed with a terminal illness and given a life expectancy of two years. However, his love for his Cambridge classmate Jane Wilde gives him a new lease on life – the two marry, have three children, and soon he is referred to as Einstein's legitimate successor. As Stephen's body is weakened by his illness, his mind soars to ever greater heights. Yet, his fate also proves to be a dramatic test for his marriage to Jane, profoundly changing both of their lives.
