Around 1940, Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller lived as a couple in New York. However, their bohemian life was constantly overshadowed by financial difficulties. One day, a private collector offered Henry Miller a dollar for a page of erotica, prompting Anaïs Nin to start writing. This led to the creation of fifteen erotic short stories, which the author only allowed to be published shortly before her death. "The Delta of Venus" describes women's sexual experiences from women's perspectives and caused a stir upon its release.
