Washington, D.C.: The Speaker of the House has fallen victim to an attack. Three days later, the head of the rare books department at the Library of Congress is found dead in a locked vault that no one else had access to. His colleague, Caleb Shaw, is appointed as the estate administrator. He discovers that a valuable book from the library is missing and finds it in the deceased's home. But is this book genuine or a forgery? Caleb seeks advice from his friends, the Guardians, a group of eccentrics who sense conspiracies everywhere. Their leader is a mysterious man named Oliver Stone. Stone uncovers a connection between the two deceased individuals. Someone is trading in state secrets on a grand scale, and the librarian must have known something. And then there's Annabelle, his clever ex-wife, who has just relieved a casino owner of 40 million dollars...
