At the age of thirteen and against his will, Thomas Bernhard was sent to a boarding school in Salzburg, where he encountered ignorance, narrow-mindedness and inhuman harshness. He experiences the National Socialist educational institution as a dungeon from which he tries to escape through daily music practice and, not least, suicidal thoughts. In Salzburg he also experiences the bombing of the city and the end of the World War. When he returns to school in 1945, he discovers that the educational methods in the now Catholic grammar school have not changed. A touching account of great clarity - read by Ulrich Matthes.
