Due to necessity, poor mountain farmers from Ticino sold their eight- to fifteen-year-old children as chimney sweep boys to Milan until the middle of the nineteenth century. They had to climb through dark chimneys like living brooms and throw down the soot with their bare hands. The work was hard and unhealthy. In their brotherhood of "black brothers," they stood together, resisted their misery, and became entangled in fights with the gang of Milanese street boys.
