The big one in the Chlyne

The dialect writer Alex Kurz does something in his stories that is anything but ordinary in our daily lives: instead of turning away from those around him, he turns towards them. There are many ways to isolate oneself from one’s surroundings. Earplugs and free newspapers are ubiquitous and tempt us not to pay too much attention when people next to us are laughing, talking, worrying, or simply being present. Kurz's stories do not revolve around stars or take place in exotic locations. He writes about people who are similar to us, describing situations that we can experience and empathize with because they relate to our everyday lives, and he does so in a language that feels familiar and close to us. When Alex Kurz writes about unemployment, friendship, fear, community, or loneliness, we as readers are immediately immersed in situations that directly affect us. The language of these stories is authentically genuine and carried by a keen sense of rhythm. This makes these dialect texts easy to read and, above all, enjoyable to read aloud. While reading, I was amazed, smiled, pondered, and once again learned that sometimes it takes very little to feel uplifted for a few hours. Sometimes, a worthwhile book is all it takes. "Ds Grosse im Chlyne" is just such a book.
