Just as the remaining members of the Enterprise's command crew are about to toast their deceased friend Spock, they are abruptly interrupted by the unexpected appearance of Spock's father. He explains to the crew that Spock had undergone a mind meld with one of the crew members before his imminent death and had elevated this person to the status of guardian of his soul. Surprisingly, it is not Kirk who has been appointed to this task, but his eternal partner in conflict, Pille McCoy. Since Spock's spirit is apparently still alive, there is the possibility of reuniting body and spirit, if only Spock's remains can be recovered in time.
