Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) is not exactly thrilled when he has to move to a small town. However, when he meets his new neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush) and finds a good friend in Champ (Ryan Lee), things start to look up. Hannah is the daughter of grumpy R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the bestselling author of the Goosebumps series. Stine harbors a dangerous secret: the monsters that made his stories famous are real, and he protects his readers from them by locking them in the books. When the monsters unfortunately escape, they wreak havoc and destruction in the town.
