Summer, 1965. The black population in the southern United States is largely denied their rightful voting rights by white government officials. Under the leadership of Martin Luther King, resistance forms in Selma, Alabama. Soon, his actions not only draw the ire of the local police and the governor of Alabama but also strain King's relationship with President Lyndon B. Johnson, leading to unrest across the entire country.
Selma tells the story of Martin Luther King's historic struggle for voting rights for the African American population of the United States—a dangerous and harrowing campaign that culminated in days of marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. These events awakened the American public and convinced President Johnson in 1965 to introduce the Voting Rights Act. Directed by Ava DuVernay, Selma features an outstanding cast led by David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King and Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson. The film also stars Carmen Ejogo, Tim Roth, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Oprah Winfrey. Alongside Oprah Winfrey, producers include Brad Pitt, Christian Colson, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner.
Selma had its international premiere in the Berlinale Special section at the 65th International Film Festival in 2015. At the Academy Awards on February 22, 2015, in Los Angeles, the Martin Luther King drama was nominated for Best Picture, and John Legend and Common won the Oscar for Best Original Song for "Glory.".
