In the early 1970s, housewife and mother Penny Chenery agrees to take over her father's horse stable, despite having no experience with the animals. Nevertheless, the stubborn woman accepts the challenge. With the help of experienced trainer Lucien Laurin, she manages to assert herself in the male-dominated field. Although no one bets a penny on her, she leads the stallion Secretariat to victory. He becomes the first horse in 25 years to win the U.S. Triple Crown.
