This smaller, widely distributed deer species in North America gets its name from its tail, which is always white on the underside.
White-tailed deer graze in the mornings and evenings. As herbivores, they feed on green plants and nuts. Deer live in small groups, usually consisting of a mother and her fawns. Males have magnificent antlers and live in small groups of three or four animals. Both male deer and does have reddish-brown fur in the summer and grayish-brown fur in the winter. Since they have few natural enemies left, deer populations sometimes grow so large that they can no longer find enough food. Deer are ruminants like cattle, meaning they have four stomachs and chew their partially digested food again. This complex process allows deer to eat branches that most animals cannot digest.
