Elephants are often referred to as thick-skinned animals. However, their skin is so sensitive that they can even get sunburned. That’s why elephants frequently cover themselves with several layers of mud. This not only protects them from the scorching heat but also acts as a pleasant cooling pack. While their large ears do not help them hear better than other animals, they do assist them in coping with the African heat. When they flap their ears, the blood within cools down, providing refreshment.
