It is a happy childhood, followed by fulfilling youth years. His father is a well-off merchant, and faith and tradition shape the family's life. As the only sibling, Ludwig is allowed to attend high school. He trains the soccer team and sings in the synagogue choir. These are the last golden years of German-Jewish coexistence, which come to a brutal end in 1930 with the rise of the Nazis. "Run away, as far as you can!" urges the local pastor to the two brothers Ludwig and Heinrich Seligmann. Shortly thereafter, in March 1933, the young men flee from Nazi Germany to France.
