Rhapsody in Blue. A modern music experiment

With "Rhapsody in Blue," Broadway composer George Gershwin, known for his musicals, broke away from traditional sounds and playfully blended blues, jazz, and classical music. At its premiere on February 12, 1924, in New York, he performed the piece, which he had composed in just five weeks, on the piano himself, as there was no complete score. George and his brother Ira Gershwin had announced the concert evening as "An Experiment in Modern Music." Present composers like Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff were thrilled. The life story of George Gershwin (1898–1937) in early 20th century Brooklyn/New York is told for the first time for children aged five and up by Bert Alexander Petzold. The internationally renowned Polish illustrator Katarzyna Surman-Pusz invites us to immerse ourselves in the musical melting pot of New York through detailed and modern illustrations.
