In 1842, the young and already celebrated author Charles Dickens embarked on a reading tour of America and Canada - from Boston to St. Louis, from Richmond to Quebec, by train or ship. Initially, he envisioned an America where a tolerant and democratic future society would emerge, free from the pretensions of the English aristocracy. Thus, he was all the more disappointed by American capitalism and especially by slavery. He articulated his criticism of the land and its people directly and not without irony in his "Notes from America," read by Christian Brückner.
