Raskolnikov. Guilt and atonement

The impoverished student Rodion Raskolnikov believes he has committed the perfect murder when he kills a greedy old pawnbroker and her sister. He thinks that great people are allowed to eliminate lives unworthy of life. He plans to escape with the old woman's money. The plan seems to work: he soon becomes the prime suspect, but crucial evidence is lacking. However, after the act, he falls into a days-long delirium filled with growing guilt and the urge to atone for his crimes. For one thing, he did not reckon with: his own conscience.
