Hello, unfortunately this is also the case with us and probably also intended by LEGO. It took a while until our little one (3 1/2 years old) internalised that she has to hold the rails in front or behind before she pushes the locomotive. Greetings

yes rails and train are compatible, rails have the same size, trains have the same trailer dimensions, it's a great railway for children
Yes, the locomotive runs even when it is not on the tracks. The motor is quite strong when the batteries are charged.

Hi, of course, the locomotive is included. In this set, the locomotive is more or less in the centre. To build a really cool track, I would recommend adding more rails or even the bridge.
