The Black Sheep (Germany, 1960, 91 min., FSK 12)
Father Brown is not only known and loved as a pastor in his small Irish parish; the man in the black cassock is also passionately involved in criminology, not only theoretically but more practically - much to the displeasure of church leaders. When one day a man is found beaten to death right in front of Brown's church, the murder awakens the detective in the pastor. He even manages to track down the culprit, which gets Brown on the front pages of the local newspapers, but at the same time tests the bishop's patience. To keep him quiet, Brown is transferred to a community where there has been no crime for years. But Father Brown seems to be attracted to crime, because shortly after his arrival the local banker is murdered. Apparently, no one living in the village has a motive. The police are in the dark. At first, the shrewd Brown keeps out of the case; after all, he doesn't want to be transferred again. But in the end, the criminologist wins in the smart priest.
He Can't Help It (Germany, 1962, 91 min., FSK 12)
Father Brown is only too happy to interfere with the work of the police in solving tricky criminal cases, often with resounding success. Therefore, the "murderous" priest is transferred to a sleepy island called Abbott's Rock. At first, nothing happens there, but somehow Father Brown seems to be attracted to crime: Soon, a gang of thieves makes their rounds on the island. So Brown makes the headlines again and is transferred again. This time, he finds himself in a tranquil Irish millionaire community. But as I said, he's kind of attracted to it. And so one day, two fatal accidents occur, behind which Father Brown's sleuth clearly smells murder - much to the annoyance of his acquaintance, Commissioner O'Connally, who believes in an accident. Of course, the Father is right; with cunning and malice, he will put a stop to the evildoer - he is sure that he will be transferred soon anyway.
