"Out of earth and dirt grew a girl. Different from all the others. Her teeth were white as snow. Her name was Hygeia." This is the story told by the orphans who were once brought to a remote island by the mysterious cult leader Fust - saved from a world drowning in dirt. Irina and her brother Paul also live here. They live in the filth of the cellar under the immaculate villa of their "saviour". Here they produce a special soap that is supposed to bring absolute purity to the sect as a sacrilege. When Fust takes notice of the beautiful Irina and chooses her to join him in the villa, the siblings are separated for the first time in their lives. The new power visibly intoxicates Irina. She does not notice how Fust prepares his cruel endgame: As Hygeia, she is to rid the world of filth, which in Fust's vision includes the children. Things take a violent course.
A film with its finger on the pulse: Director Nikias Chryssos (THE BUNKER) succeeds with A PURE PLACE in creating a nightmarish mixture of psychological thriller and modern parable that gets under your skin. With his disturbing images of a Greece that is both paradisiacal and sinister, he descends into the paranoid abysses of a germ-free society. A PURE PLACE is a dystopian film about the social terror of perfection that has its roots in the shallows of the human soul.
