The renowned travel writer Bill Bryson does not want to settle into a boring retirement life. Despite all the warnings from his loving wife Cynthia and his children, he is determined to embark on one last adventure and tackle the Appalachian Trail, a 3,500-kilometer hiking path across the USA. However, the problems begin with finding a suitable hiking partner. The only one willing to join him on this journey is his long-estranged school friend Steven Katz, a former alcoholic who brings not only a poor fitness level but also too many extra pounds for this daring endeavor. Nevertheless, this mismatched duo sets off into the breathtaking American wilderness, rediscovering an old friendship along the way.
