"Outside the Door" is a cry of protest against the destructive power of war. Front soldier Beckmann returns home with a shattered kneecap from Russian captivity. Driven out of the house by his wife and her lover, he decides to take his own life. However, the Elbe River, into which he plunges, spits him back out, forcing him to confront life anew. The first broadcast of the 1947 radio play production became the greatest audience success of radio in the post-war era. It has lost none of its urgency to this day.
