Finkenwerder near Hamburg, 1923: Paul is still almost a boy when he sneaks aboard an ocean liner to New York as a stowaway. In the New World, he wants to seek his fortune, as his parents' fruit farm has long felt too small and cramped for him. In Brooklyn, he manages to establish himself, and when he meets Antonina, whose family has immigrated from Sicily, he seems to find a new home. However, to realize his greatest dream of becoming a doctor, Paul must return to his family in Germany - and in 1937, he enters a country he barely recognizes. This also puts Antonina's love for him to a harsher test than she ever could have imagined.
