One woman, one flat, one novel

With an ironic look at the sixties, Genazino describes the journey of a young man: Weigand, the seventeen-year-old narrator without a first name, who is expelled from high school due to poor grades and takes an apprenticeship at a shipping company for his mother's sake. However, Weigand actually dreams of a life as a writer. Thus, he begins to lead a double life, driven by three things he believes he needs in life: a woman, an apartment, and a self-written novel.
