As controversial as Ernst Jünger was throughout his life, the reception of his novel "On the Marble Cliffs" was equally fluctuating. Released at the beginning of World War II, it was interpreted as a parable of National Socialism: in a fictional country, a brutal regime destroys culture and people. Joseph Goebbels is said to have raged after reading it. Later, the novel was criticized primarily for its pure aesthetics, which were seen as lacking a moral stance. Rudolf Jürgen Bartsch, who himself experienced World War II, lends his voice to this novel.
