For young Margaret Hale, a world is collapsing. Her father, the clergyman Richard Hale, doubts his faith and has a falling out with the church. Overnight, the idyllic life in southern England comes to an end. Instead, the family moves to Milton, in the far north. It is a typical industrial town where the Hales now live. Margaret is shocked. She has never experienced such a stark contrast between rich and poor as she does here. She feels compelled to take action. Side by side with the workers, she wants to wrest better working conditions from the factory owner John Thornton. A struggle begins, the setting of which soon shifts.
