For young Margaret Hale, her world is collapsing. Her father, the clergyman Richard Hale, is doubting his faith and has a falling out with the church. Overnight, the idyllic life in southern England comes to an end. Instead, the family moves to Milton, in the far north. It is a typical industrial town where the Hales now live. Margaret is shocked. She has never witnessed such a stark contrast between rich and poor as she does here. She feels compelled to take action. Side by side with the workers, she aims to wrest better working conditions from the factory owner John Thornton. A struggle begins, the setting of which soon shifts. For Thornton falls in love with the headstrong girl from the south. Meanwhile, Margaret faces many adversities. After the death of her parents, she leaves the town and returns to her homeland. However, she cannot find peace there; the people of the north have long since captured her heart. So she sets out one last time to finally find her happiness and never let it go.
