The police consult private investigator Holly Gibney. An anonymous letter has announced a series of murders. The first victim is an innocent woman, holding a note in her hand. The name on it refers to a juror who was involved in the conviction of an innocent person, who was later stabbed to death in prison. The deranged killer is committing acts of vengeance by targeting substitute victims instead of the juror. "Those responsible for the innocent person's death must suffer," it stated. The random killings continue. While Holly feverishly pieces together the puzzle, she is also busy fending off attacks on a feminist for whom she is providing protection.
