The story follows the life of Sara Lehmann, who arrives in South Africa in 1948 with other orphaned children from Germany. An influential Boer family adopts the four-year-old girl, unaware that she is Jewish. When her papers arrive one day, her adoptive father withdraws his affection from her. Only the adoptive mother and the eldest brother continue to treat Sara with love and respect. After graduating from school, Sara decides to study law to fight for the rights of the black population. In doing so, she crosses the line of legality. Although she is acquitted, she must flee from the secret service. Yet, Sara continues to fight for freedom and justice. This is one of the most moving stories that emerged from the Holocaust, as it intertwines personal and impersonal fate in such a profound way.
