Author's note
Judith Kerr was born on June 14, 1923, as the daughter of the famous theater critic Alfred Kerr in Berlin. Immediately after the Nazis came to power, the Jewish family had to flee Germany. After stops in Switzerland and France, they finally emigrated to London in 1935. After the war, Judith Kerr worked as a freelance painter and textile designer. From 1953, she worked for the BBC, initially as an editor and proofreader, and later as a screenwriter. In 1954, Judith Kerr married the writer Nigel Kneale. After the birth of her children Tacy and Matthew, she gave up her work for several years.
