From life-threatening decisions, forged passports, and fateful friendships: Fritze Thormann, an avid reader and enthusiastic athlete, is one of those unfortunate people who always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. At nearly 16 years old, he has already found himself in many risky situations. Most recently during the honor service of the HJ at the 1936 Olympics. Just moments before, he managed to get an autograph from his running idol Jesse Owens, when dark clouds suddenly gather above him: Fritz becomes an unwitting witness to a suicide, the circumstances of which are highly questionable. However, the police and his guardian do not believe him. Even worse: the Gestapo wants to pin something on him that he didn’t do, leaving the boy with no choice but to flee and go underground. With a forged passport, Fritz starts working at the Kleinfeld coal trading company in Berlin-Mitte. The pay is good, his boss is decent, but Fritz is alone and misses his friends. Especially Charly, who was once his foster mother. And his fateful friend Hannah, of whom he only knows that she is hiding under a false name in Breslau. Thus, Fritz begins to write letters from his hiding place. They replace the conversation partners he desperately needs, as things become dangerous for him once again. Because not only has the Gestapo begun searching for the unwanted witness. A much more direct threat looms over Fritz.
