Manhattan Transfer

Through a multitude of settings and characters, John Dos Passos creates a vivid portrait of the urban jungle of New York, where the fever for work, happiness, and power rages. The characters in the story—a young immigrant, a union leader, a murderer, a careerist, a woman striving for independence, and others—seem to be ripped from the vast mass of city dwellers, only to eventually sink back into the chaos. However, the true protagonist of the novel is the metropolis of New York in the early 20th century, extending into the post-World War I era.
