One day, Ibrahima Dieng (Makhouredia Gueye) receives a letter with a money order from his nephew, a street sweeper in Paris. The unemployed Ibrahima, who has a large family to support in Dakar, is instructed to keep only 2,000 Francs for himself from the 20,000 Francs of the order; the rest must be saved for his nephew and sister. However, news of his supposed wealth spreads quickly. His wives, neighbors, and family see this unexpected fortune as their chance to escape poverty.

But when Ibrahima tries to cash the check, he finds that it can only be done with an ID that he does not have, nor does he possess a birth certificate. Ibrahima embarks on a nightmarish journey through the absurd and corrupt jungle of Senegalese bureaucracy, which ultimately leaves him in an even more miserable state than before.
