Maigret investigates for the first time: the clarification earns him a promotion to the Quai des Orfèvres.
The young secretary Jules Maigret takes a report at the Saint-Georges station. Justin Minard, a flautist, claims to have heard a woman's cries for help in the villa district of rue Chaptal, followed shortly by a gunshot. Maigret immediately goes to the scene of the incident, but the influential family living in the house does not want any clarification. And Maigret's superior also gets in the way of the insecure, somewhat overzealous Maigret.
Maigret's 30th case is set in Rue Chaptal in the 9th arrondissement of Paris.
