At the age of 19, Bavaria's fairy tale king Ludwig II ascends to the throne. However, his interests lie less in politics and more in art and music. He admires the composer Richard Wagner and becomes his greatest patron. He increasingly neglects his governmental duties. He withdraws into art and indulges in homoerotic fantasies. He invests vast sums in the construction of his dream castles. Only with his cousin Sissi does the lonely monarch find understanding.
