Spain in the Middle Ages, between 1058 and 1099: Early on, the young Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, who will later be reverently called "El Cid," earns the nickname "The Fighter," as no one can defeat him in knightly combat. However, fate has many twists in store for the adult man: His king, Sancho II of Castile, is murdered by his own sister. Although Rodrigo finds the love of his life in Jimena, he is unaware that she has been sent to spy on him by the new king. When he is also banished from the Kingdom of Castile and separated from his family, Rodrigo, with the help of Moorish allies, establishes an independent principality in eastern Spain. But then a massive Muslim army from North Africa lands in Spain, and the battle for Valencia approaches, which will ultimately make El Cid a legend.
