Karl August Böttiger was a contemporary of the great poets and thinkers of Weimar, capturing everything that came his way: voices and images, gossip and chatter. Today, one might attribute traits of a paparazzo to Böttiger, especially when he writes about Goethe's domestic life: "In the evening, he sits in a well-heated room, a white coachman's cap on his head, wearing a molton jacket and long fluffy trousers." Böttiger became so unpopular in Weimar with his writings that he had to leave the city in 1804. Jürgen Hentsch reads these intimate records from classical Weimar in his unmistakable voice.
