In "King Lear," the father tests his daughters and asks who loves him the most. While Goneril and Regan indulge in hypocrisy, Cordelia speaks the truth: she loves her father no more and no less than a daughter should. King Lear is outraged by this apparent lack of love and curses her. Only years later, lonely, impoverished, and cast out, does he realize his mistake, and his shared guilt in the death of his beloved daughter Cordelia leads him to the grave as well.
